Introduction & Project Overview

We collaborated with W&W AFCO STEEL to provide erection engineering—planning and managing the safe structural assembly of a double-deck pedestrian bridge at UNM Hospital, the University of New Mexico’s flagship academic medical center. This high-profile bridge project enhances healthcare infrastructure and showcases our expertise in pedestrian bridge construction in Albuquerque. Spanning 200 feet between supports, this bridge links the hospital's new tower to an existing building, greatly improving accessibility between the facilities.

Erection Engineering Strategy

Assembling a long-span pedestrian bridge of this scale requires innovative structural engineering and precise erection sequencing. Each phase of the erection was planned, including:

  • The sequencing of lifts
  • Placement of temporary supports
  • Coordination with major equipment
Execution & Crane Coordination

Temporary bracing and shoring played a key role in stabilizing each bridge segment throughout erection. These elements allowed the team to safely assemble the structure, one piece at a time.

By developing and following a detailed bridge erection sequencing plan, we streamlined the construction process and ensured that every step was completed safely and efficiently. This approach helped navigate the logistical complexity of erecting a long-span, double-deck bridge within a constrained site and allowed for smooth installation and alignment with field conditions.

Results & Impact

This project demonstrates how thorough planning, technical expertise, and coordinated teamwork can address and overcome even the most complex engineering and erection challenges—something we’re proud to bring to every Stubbs project, especially those with tight logistics and critical performance demands.
