Dallas Zoo Expansion

Project Overview

Stubbs Engineering partnered with CLR Design on a transformative $90 million expansion at the Dallas Zoo—reimagining 10 acres of the campus with immersive animal habitats, guest-focused amenities, and sustainably repurposed infrastructure.

Stubbs' Engineering Role

Stubbs is providing structural engineering expertise throughout the project—applying thoughtful design strategies to ensure long-term performance, safety, and seamless integration across a wide range of habitats and guest-facing elements. Our solutions support innovative exhibit architecture, durable infrastructure, and sustainable visitor pathways.

Animal Habitats

The project includes new, carefully crafted habitats for a diverse range of species—including penguins, flamingos, okapi, cheetahs, and rhinoceroses. Each enclosure is designed to simulate natural ecosystems—requiring structural solutions that balance animal welfare, guest immersion, and environmental integrity.

Immersive Aviary

A highlight of the expansion is the creation of a state-of-the-art aviary. With soaring rooflines and integrated viewing platforms, the aviary is designed to bring guests eye-level with rare bird species through spacious enclosures and thoughtfully placed viewing areas. This feature supports immersive learning and contributes to the zoo’s broader educational mission.

Guest Amenities

Stubbs is also supporting key guest amenities, including a modern café, elevated pedestrian bridges, and shaded observation areas. These elements are engineered for long-term durability, accessibility, and seamless integration into the landscape.

Sustainable Skywalk

Stubbs is helping convert this legacy structure into a pedestrian skywalk that weaves through the treetops—offering guests a new perspective while highlighting adaptive reuse and environmentally mindful design.

Shared Values & Impact

This ambitious project reflects the Dallas Zoo’s continued leadership in conservation, education, and guest engagement—values that align closely with Stubbs Engineering’s mission. Stubbs is proud to be shaping the future of zoological design alongside trusted partners—bringing dependable, innovative solutions to complex public-facing projects.
