Bel Air High School Sports Center

Bel Air High School Sports Center

Stubbs Engineering provided structural design services for Bel Air High School. The School needed a brand-new sports center to accommodate its successful basketball, volleyball, wrestling, and dance programs. Stubbs worked with the school to come up with solutions for the lack of land available. This led to the decision to build at 98,000 sq. Ft two story multiuse gymnasium, which houses a competitive gym on the first floor and a practice gym on the second floor. The practice gym includes three courts, a wrestling room, and a gymnastics practice area. The competition gym is a column-free space so there are no obstructed views of the court, and since the second floor of the building would also be used for athletics, vibrations on this floor were a concern. The suspended equipment like goals and lights could not be affected by vibrations due to activities on the second floor. To solve this problem floor trusses for the second floor was designed to clear a span of 135 feet and weigh 27 tons.
